Training

Claire is an expert in the field of special educational needs and disability law and has 19 years experience in SEND which includes providing advice and representation to parents. Claire is a highly regarded and confident trainer who has delivered training to parents, Head teachers, SENCOs, local authorities and other professionals throughout England.

We provide training to parents and those advising parents across the country. Our training courses will provide you with an understanding of SEND law and explore how it affects you as a parent. Importantly, our training aims to equip you with the knowledge and skills necessary to get the right education and achieve better outcomes for your child or young person.

Our one day face to face training sessions are designed to fit around school hours. The shorter face to face sessions can be delivered anytime including evenings. We will come to a location of your choice at a time which is convenient for your group. Our training can also be delivered virtually using MS Teams or Zoom. We can deliver full day training sessions over two half days at times which are convenient for your group/organisation.

The SEND framework and EHC plans

£750 plus reasonable expenses

This one day face to face training has been specifically designed for groups of parents and those advising parents who want a general overview of the SEND framework. The training covers children/YP on SEN support and school/college duties, EHC needs assessments and EHC plans. The training also explains rights when requesting a particular education placement and what parents/YP can do if the local authority refuses to name the placement they want in the EHC plan. The training is delivered to fit within school hours starting at 10am and finishing at 2.30pm. We will finish with a Q&A session. Please contact us for further information.

Exclusion from school and children out of education – a practical approach

£390 plus reasonable expenses

This 3 hour face to face session covers everything you need to know about exclusion and what your rights are. This has been specifically designed for groups of parents and those advising parents who want to know more about the exclusion framework. We will look at unlawful, fixed period and permanent exclusion; education off-site to ‘improve behaviour’ and the education the school or local authority must provide when a child is excluded. We will also look at the practical steps you can take as a parent to ensure the school and/or local authority meets your child’s needs to prevent further exclusion. Transport – deconstructing entitlement

£325 plus reasonable expenses

This 2.5 hour session covers everything you need to know about home to school/college transport entitlement and has been specifically designed for groups of parents and those advising parents who want to know more about transport law . We will look at the many common misconceptions around entitlement; entitlement to transport for eligible children; the ‘nearest suitable school’ principle and transport for young people/adult learners. Education, Health and Care Plans – making sure they are fit for purpose

£390 plus reasonable expenses/ Practitioners £450 plus reasonable expenses

This 3 hour session covers everything you need to know about EHC needs assessments and EHC plans. This training session has been specifically designed for groups of parents and those advising parents who are are thinking about requesting an EHC needs assessment or who are going through the assessment process with a view to obtaining an EHC plan. We will look at the legal requirements for EHC needs assessments and EHC plans including the practical steps you can take to ensure the EHC plan becomes fit for purpose. We will finish with a Q&A session. The practitioners version is tailored towards Head teachers/SENCOs and includes tips on submitting advice for the EHC needs assessment and making sure that funding reflects provision specified in the EHC plan. Annual Review – a practical approach

£390 plus reasonable expenses/ Practitioners £450 plus reasonable expenses

This 3 hour face to face session covers everything you need to know about annual review of EHC plans and what your rights are. This training has been specifically designed for groups of parents and those advising parents who want to know more about the legal requirements of annual reviews. We will look at the purpose of annual review within the SEND framework; procedure and practice; decision making following the review; rights if the EHC plan is amended, maintained without change or a cease to maintain notice is issued. We will also look at the practical steps you can take as a parent to ensure the school and local authority adhere to the correct processes. We will finish with a Q&A session. The practitioners version is tailored towards Head teachers/SENCOs and education settings who have responsibilities for contributing to the annual review process.  Please contact us for further information.

Post 16 – what happens next?

£390 plus reasonable expenses

This 3 hour face to face session has been designed for parent/carers and those advising them who want to know more about rights and options for post 16 education and training where the child or young person has an EHC plan. We will look at preparation for post 16 within the SEND framework; ending EHC plans – myths and misconceptions; education and training options for young people including alternative education/training packages and rights. We will also look at the practical steps you can take as a parent to support your young person to ensure they have their needs met. We will finish with a Q&A session. SEND Tribunal

£850 plus reasonable expenses

This full day face to face session has been designed for those in the professional and voluntary sector who are supporting and assisting parents/young people at the SEND Tribunal. The training will cover pre-appeal issues; rights of appeal – legal tests, burden and evidence; timeline of the appeal including the local authority response, further evidence and pre-hearing preparation; the hearing and what to expect on the day.  We will finish with a Q&A session. Local Authority training

£1,250 plus reasonable expenses

We have designed a range of SEND law training packages specifically for local authority professionals. Our full day package covers the SEND framework including duties on education providers; exclusion from school; statutory duties on local authorities; EHC plans, contents and naming a school/college; home to school transport for children and young people. We also have shorter training packages to cover a variety of subjects such as annual review, post 16 SEND framework and transport for children and young people. The daily rate for local authority training applies whether it is commissioned directly by or on behalf of a local authority. Shorter training packages such as Annual Review training are calculated at the daily rate pro rata according to the length of the session. Please contact us for further information.
